Science and Religion
A member of the United Church of Christ, Townes considers that "science and religion quite parallel, much more similar than most people think and that in the long run, they must converge". In 2005, he was awarded the Templeton Prize for "Progress Toward Research or Discoveries about Spiritual Realities." Townes is the only figure other than Mother Teresa and the Dalai Lama to win both a Templeton Prize and a Nobel Prize.

Famous quotes containing the words science and/or religion:
“But dont despise error. When touched by genius, when led by chance, the most superior truth can come into being from even the most foolish error. The important inventions which have been brought about in every realm of science from false hypotheses number in the hundreds, indeed in the thousands.”
—Stefan Zweig (18811942)
“Your honesty is not to be based either on religion or policy. Both your religion and policy must be based on it. Your honesty must be based, as the sun is, in vacant heaven; poised, as the lights in the firmament, which have rule over the day and over the night.”
—John Ruskin (18191900)
