Miscarriage
Sen. Kennedy's wife Joan Bennett Kennedy was pregnant at the time of the incident. Though confined to bed due to two previous miscarriages, she attended the funeral of Kopechne and stood beside her husband in court three days later. She suffered a third miscarriage soon thereafter which she blamed on the Chappaquiddick incident.
