Catholic Priests - Duties of A Catholic Priest

Duties of A Catholic Priest

Three main aspects to the Priesthood: offering the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, hearing confessions, and counselling. Whilst continuing to hold the importance of these two aspects of Priesthood, today the Church has a significantly broader understanding.

Priests are also responsible for daily recitation of the principal and minor offices of the Liturgy of the Hours. Catholic priests are the only ministers of the Sacrament of Penance and Anointing of the Sick. They are the ordinary ministers of Baptism and witnesses to Holy Matrimony.

Columbus stood in his age as the pioneer of progress and enlightenment. The system of universal education is in our age the most prominent and salutary feature of the spirit of enlightenment, and it is peculiarly appropriate that the schools be made by the people the center of the day’s demonstration. Let the national flag float over every schoolhouse in the country and the exercises be such as shall impress upon our youth the patriotic duties of American citizenship.
    Benjamin Harrison (1833–1901)

The application requisite to the duties of the office I hold [governor of Virginia] is so excessive, and the execution of them after all so imperfect, that I have determined to retire from it at the close of the present campaign.
    Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826)

You have begot me, bred me, loved me. I
Return those duties back as are right fit,
Obey you, love you, and most honor you.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

Through my fault, my most grievous fault.
    [Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa.]

In my dreams is a country where the State is the Church and the Church the people: three in one and one in three. It is a commonwealth in which work is play and play is life: three in one and one in three. It is a temple in which the priest is the worshiper and the worshiper the worshipped: three in one and one in three. It is a godhead in which all life is human and all humanity divine: three in one and one in three.
    George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950)
