Castle Drogo - Gardens

Gardens

The castle has a fine formal garden, designed by Lutyens with planting by George Dillistone, which contrasts effectively with its striking setting on the edge of Dartmoor. The garden is noted for its rhododendrons and magnolias, herbaceous borders, rose garden, shrub garden and circular croquet lawn.

Famous quotes containing the word gardens:

    These are the Gardens of the Desert, these
    The unshorn fields, boundless and beautiful,
    And fresh as the young earth, ere man had sinned—
    William Cullen Bryant (1794–1878)

    Our fathers wrung their bread from stocks and stones
    And fenced their gardens with the Redman’s bones;
    Robert Lowell (1917–1977)

    Thou didst create the night, but I made the lamp.
    Thou didst create clay, but I made the cup.
    Thou didst create the deserts, mountains and forests,
    I produced the orchards, gardens and groves.
    It is I who made the glass out of stone,
    And it is I who turn a poison into an antidote.
    Muhammad, Sir Iqbal (1873–1938)
