Early Life
Baker was born and raised in Johnstown, Pennsylvania in a Roman Catholic family, the daughter of Virginia (née Duffy) and William Watson Baker, who was a traveling salesman. Baker's parents separated when she was eight years old and she moved with her mother and younger sister, Virginia, to Turtle Creek, Pennsylvania.
Baker attended high school in Greensburg, and then moved with her family to St. Petersburg, Florida, where she attended St. Pete Junior College. After spending a year in college, she began working as a magician's assistant as well as joining a dance company. In 1951, Baker moved to New York City and studied acting under Lee Strasberg, eventually becoming part of the famed Actor's Studio, where she was an acquaintance of Marilyn Monroe and became good friends with James Dean.

Famous quotes containing the words early life, early and/or life:
“... business training in early life should not be regarded solely as insurance against destitution in the case of an emergency. For from business experience women can gain, too, knowledge of the world and of human beings, which should be of immeasurable value to their marriage careers. Self-discipline, co-operation, adaptability, efficiency, economic management,if she learns these in her business life she is liable for many less heartbreaks and disappointments in her married life.”
—Hortense Odlum (1892?)
“In early times every sort of advantage tends to become a military advantage; such is the best way, then, to keep it alive. But the Jewish advantage never did so; beginning in religion, contrary to a thousand analogies, it remained religious. For that we care for them; from that have issued endless consequences.”
—Walter Bagehot (18261877)
“Those whose life is long still strive for gain, and for all mortals all things take second place to money.”
—Sophocles (497406/5 B.C.)
