Carpenter Gothic Architecture - "American Gothic"

"American Gothic"

"American Gothic" is a painting by Grant Wood from 1930. Wood's inspiration came from a cottage designed in the Carpenter Gothic style with a distinctive upper window and a decision to paint the house along with "the kind of people I fancied should live in that house."

Famous quotes containing the words american and/or gothic:

No American worth his salt should go around looking for a root. I advance this in all modesty, as a not unreasonable opinion.
    Wyndham Lewis (1882–1957)

The gothic is singular in this; one seems easily at home in the renaissance; one is not too strange in the Byzantine; as for the Roman, it is ourselves; and we could walk blindfolded through every chink and cranny of the Greek mind; all these styles seem modern when we come close to them; but the gothic gets away.
    Henry Brooks Adams (1838–1918)
