Carolco's Library Today
Afters its bankruptcy, the assets of Carolco were later sold off to other companies, most already sold during Carolco's existence. In March 1996, Canal+ purchased the library in bankruptcy court to the tune of $58 million. Today, the ancillary rights to Carolco's library (up to 1993) are held by French production company StudioCanal, since its parent company, Canal+ Group, owned a stake in Carolco (eventually buying out its partners).
In 1992, Carolco licensed television rights to Spelling Entertainment in order to pay off debt. In the United States, television rights are now held by Paramount Pictures/CBS Television Studios (who also hold those rights in Canada). all other rights licenced to Lionsgate, Lionsgate in turn licences those rights in Canada to Maple Pictures/Alliance Films
In Europe, StudioCanal themselves hold full distribution rights in France, Germany, Ireland and the United Kingdom, in other terrtories, StudioCanal licenses those rights to various local distributors
In Asia, Africa and Oceania, Universal Studios who joinly own StudioCanal with the Canal+ Group, own all the distribution rights in those regions or license them out to their local distributors
The Orbis Communications library is now held by CBS Television Distribution, with the exception of the Orbis-distributed Live Aid concert, whose rights are currently held by Warner Music Group.
Films made by Seven Arts Pictures (a JV with New Line Cinema), are also owned by StudioCanal, with the same distribution partners as with the Carolco library
Films made with and distributed with Universal Studios are now the latter studio, who also hold all distribution rights
The exeception to all of this are these following films in terms of ownership are these following films
- Wagons East!
- Stargate
- Showgirls
- Cutthroat Island
- Hamlet
- Last of the Dogmen
In the case of Wagons East, Stargate, Showgirls and Cutthroat Island, all ownership and distrbution rights are now held by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer who distrbuted the films on their orginal release
In the case of Hamlet, ownership and distrbution rights are now held by Warner Bros who distrbuted the films on their orginal release, apart from the copyright, which is held by Icon Distribution, Inc.)
In the case of Last of the Dogmen, the owndership and distrubution rights where held by co-producer Savoy Pictures, when they went out of business, their library was sold to Focus Features, who now hold those rights
