She hosts 'A Little Less Strictly Come Dancing' Ball for them every year alongside Angus Purden. Smillie was a contestant on the British TV game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?. supporting the charity NSPCC. She appeared on the show with Michael Aspel. In her October Video Blog, Smillie announced that she would pose topless with various other celebrities to promote a Breast Cancer awareness campaign. She stated that "she had thought long and hard about doing this, but it was such a worthwhile campaign, she just couldn't say no".

On 7 June 2009, Smillie joined more than 17,000 women in the Glasgow 5k Race For Life to raise funds for Cancer Research UK. The Race was the largest Race For Life event in the UK and the organisers raised £900,000 for Cancer Research UK. Smillie was sponsored by Edinburgh Woollen Mill for £1000.

Famous quotes containing the words charity and/or work:

Opening the door of charity can create problems.
    Chinese proverb.

How did you get in the Navy? How did you get on our side? Ah, you ignorant, arrogant, ambitious—keeping sixty two men in prison cause you got a palm tree for the work they did. I don’t know which I hate worse, you or that malignant growth that stands outside your door. How did you ever get command of a ship? I realize in wartime they have to scrape the bottom of the barrel. But where’d they ever scrape you up?
    Frank S. Nugent (1908–1965)
