Kiltie Band
The Kiltie Band is the concert and marching band of Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. It is known for wearing kilts, in recognition of the Scottish-American ancestry of Andrew Carnegie, the founder of the university. As of 2012, the band's director is music professor Paul Gerlach. The band was formed in 1908 with seven members and has grown to more than 130 members. Until 1957 the band was male only, but in that year a female flutist joined and by 1961 there were eleven young women in the band.

Famous quotes containing the word band:
“What passes for identity in America is a series of myths about ones heroic ancestors. Its astounding to me, for example, that so many people really seem to believe that the country was founded by a band of heroes who wanted to be free. That happens not to be true. What happened was that some people left Europe because they couldnt stay there any longer and had to go someplace else to make it. They were hungry, they were poor, they were convicts.”
—James Baldwin (19241987)
