Card Counting

Card counting is a casino card game strategy used primarily in the blackjack family of casino games to determine whether the next hand is likely to give a probable advantage to the player or to the dealer. Card counters, also known as advantage players, attempt to decrease the inherent casino house edge by keeping a running tally of all high and low valued cards seen by the player. Card counting allows players to bet more with less risk when the count gives an advantage as well as minimize losses during an unfavorable count. Card counting also provides the ability to alter playing decisions based on the composition of remaining cards. Card counting also refers to obtaining a count of the distribution or of the remaining high cards in trick-taking games such as contract bridge or spades.

Famous quotes containing the words card and/or counting:

    What is the disease which manifests itself in an inability to leave a party—any party at all—until it is all over and the lights are being put out?... I suppose that part of this mania for staying is due to a fear that, if I go, something good will happen and I’ll miss it. Somebody might do card tricks, or shoot somebody else.
    Robert Benchley (1889–1945)

    Love is sinister,
    is mean to us in separation;
    makes our thin bodies thinner.
    This fellow Death
    lacks mercy
    and is good at counting our days.
    And Master,
    you, too, are subject
    to the plague of jealousy
    so think:
    how could womenfolk,
    soft as sprouts,
    live like this?
    Amaru (c. seventh century A.D.)
