"Cara Mia" is a popular song published in 1954 and became a hit for English singer David Whitfield in 1954 and a #4 hit by the American pop group Jay and the Americans in 1965. The title means "my beloved" in Italian.
The English singer David Whitfield first recorded the song with the Mantovani Orchestra in 1954. This recording made the charts in the United States, and in the UK it was the first record to spend ten consecutive weeks in the #1 slot on the UK Singles Chart. Whitfield's second number one was one of the biggest selling British records in the pre-rock days. It sold well more than three and a half million copies worldwide and Whitfield joined Vera Lynn in the small rank of British stars who had achieved a Top 10 hit in America.
Authorship of the song was credited to "Tulio Trapani and Lee Lange." In reality Lee Lange was a pseudonym for Whitfield's producer Bunny Lewis, and Tulio Trapani was the nom de plume of the song's co-writer and arranger Mantovani.
Jay & The Americans' "Cara Mia" went to the charts in Holland when it was re-released in 1980.
