Public Opinion

Italy has since developed a stance strongly against capital punishment. Fewer than half of Italians approved of the 2006 execution of Saddam Hussein. Famous quotes containing the words public opinion, public and/or opinion:

A state that denies its citizens their basic rights becomes a danger to its neighbors as well: internal arbitrary rule will be reflected in arbitrary external relations. The suppression of public opinion, the abolition of public competition for power and its public exercise opens the way for the state power to arm itself in any way it sees fit.... A state that does not hesitate to lie to its own people will not hesitate to lie to other states.
    Václav Havel (b. 1936)

The Muse is mute when public men
    Applaud a modern throne.
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)

If an opinion can eventually go to the determination of a practical belief, it, in so far, becomes itself a practical belief; and every proposition that is not pure metaphysical jargon and chatter must have some possible bearing upon practice.
    Charles Sanders Peirce (1839–1914)
