"Can't Hold Us Down" proved to be successful, just peaking inside the top-twenty in the United States. Internationally, the song peaked within the top ten in the UK, Ireland and Australia and several other countries, and reached number 2 in New Zealand. Despite performing well on several charts, the song was not included in her greatest hits album, Keeps Gettin' Better: A Decade of Hits.
On the Australian ARIA Charts, the song debuted at number 5, on the week of September 28, 2003. It stayed on the charts for nine weeks. On the New Zealand Singles Chart, the single was even more successful, debuting at number 38 and reaching number 2, in its fifth week. The single stayed at the top ten for ten weeks, desceding and climbing constantly on the charts. It stayed on the New Zealand charts for fifteen weeks. The single also reached the top twenty in Netherlands, Austria, Belgium, Sweden, Italy and more.
The single proved to be more successful than the previous single "Fighter" in the United States. On the Billboard Hot 100, the song reached number 12, becoming Aguilera's 10th top twenty hit. On the Pop Songs, the song peaked at number 3, becoming the second most successful single of the album, only behind of Beautiful.
