In June 2009, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) approved the first canine influenza vaccine. This vaccine must be given twice initially with a two-week break, then annually thereafter. Because any vaccine can have negative side effects on some dogs, many dog owners are choosing not to vaccinate because most dogs recover from the flu with mild symptoms, and research indicates that once a dog has recovered from canine influenza, immunity appears to last at least two years.
