The Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA), is an organization headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada that provides legal defence and liability protection to physicians across Canada, and provides compensation to patients and their families proven to have been harmed by negligent clinical care. The organization was founded at the 1901 annual meeting of the Canadian Medical Association. The CMPA was incorporated by Act of Parliament on 27 February 1913, and given Royal Assent on 16 May 1913. Approximately 95% of Canadian doctors join the CMPA. In 2010 the membership rolls recorded more than 78,000 physicians.
