Black Pajamas
The Khmer Rouge regime of the 1970s was well-noted for popularising black unisex "pajamas." The typical peasant outfit consisted of a collarless black shirt, baggy trousers, and a checkered krama knotted loosely about the neck. Brightly colored clothing was strictly prohibited under the Khmer Rouge; colors were limited to black, dark blue, or maroon plain coloring. Women were strictly forbidden to wear any Western-style trousers or jeans at any time, although after the fall of the Khmer Rouge, these became increasingly popular, particularly among young women.
