Famous quotes containing the words california, palace, legion and/or honor:
“The Indian remarked as before, Must have hard wood to cook moose-meat, as if that were a maxim, and proceeded to get it. My companion cooked some in California fashion, winding a long string of the meat round a stick and slowly turning it in his hand before the fire. It was very good. But the Indian, not approving of the mode, or because he was not allowed to cook it his own way, would not taste it.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“Good places for aphorisms: in fortune cookies, on bumper stickers, and on banners flying over the Palace of Free Advice.”
—Mason Cooley (b. 1927)
“I am sometimes told that Women aint fit to vote. Why, dont you know that a woman had seven devils in her: and do you suppose a woman is fit to rule the nation? Seven devils aint no account; a man had a legion in him.”
—Sojourner Truth (c. 17971883)
“Let fame, that all hunt after in their lives,
Live registered upon our brazen tombs,
And then grace us in the disgrace of death;
When spite of cormorant devouring Time,
Th endeavor of this present breath may buy
That honor which shall bate his scythes keen edge,
And make us heirs of all eternity.”
—William Shakespeare (15641616)
