California Hospital Medical Center - History

History

The hospital was founded as California Hospital in 1887 by Dr. Walter Lindley and two other physicians. In 1921 the hospital was purchased by the Lutheran Hospital Society of Southern California. In 1988, LHS merged with HealthWest, the parent company of Northridge Hospital, to form UniHealth. UniHealth struggled financially in the 1990s after acquiring physician groups in difficulties, and in 1998, UniHealth sold its hospitals to Catholic Healthcare West. CHW became Dignity Health in 2012.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

Most events recorded in history are more remarkable than important, like eclipses of the sun and moon, by which all are attracted, but whose effects no one takes the trouble to calculate.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

What has history to do with me? Mine is the first and only world! I want to report how I find the world. What others have told me about the world is a very small and incidental part of my experience. I have to judge the world, to measure things.
    Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889–1951)

We said that the history of mankind depicts man; in the same way one can maintain that the history of science is science itself.
    Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe (1749–1832)
