California Governor & First Lady's Conference On Women

The California Governor & First Lady's Conference on Women (also known as The Women's Conference) was established by California Governor George Deukmejian in 1985 as a non-partisan forum for women small business owners. At that time, women-owned businesses were failing at a high rate and the conference was created to provide support to this growing sector of the economy and help women access funding and resources.

In 1989, the conference was established as a non-profit public interest organization with a bi-partisan Board of Directors, which ensured that it could continue without interruption during changes in administrations.

Under California Governor Pete Wilson's administration, the focus of the Conference shifted to include the needs of a wider audience, including corporate women. An educational scholarship program was added to the conference during Wilson's term.

The conference continued to grow its attendance and expand its outreach during the administration of Governor Gray Davis. A youth leadership program was added to the conference during Davis's term.

Under California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and First Lady Maria Shriver's leadership, the California Governor & First Lady's Conference on Women, renamed The Women's Conference, has reportedly become the largest one-day conference for women in the nation. Since 2004, conference participants have included such high-profile speakers as His Holiness the Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso, Oprah Winfrey, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, the Sarah, Duchess of York, Barbara Walters, Jane Fonda, Queen Noor of Jordan, Martha Stewart, Tyra Banks, Tim Russert, Tom Brokaw, Queen Rania of Jordan, Maureen Dowd, Sandra Day O'Connor, Thomas Friedman, Anna Quindlen, and Billie Jean King.

The conference has been located at the Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach, California since 1993.

Famous quotes containing the words california, governor, lady, conference and/or women:

    But why go to California for a text? She is the child of New England, bred at her own school and church.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

    Three years ago, also, when the Sims tragedy was acted, I said to myself, There is such an officer, if not such a man, as the Governor of Massachusetts,—what has he been about the last fortnight? Has he had as much as he could do to keep on the fence during this moral earthquake?... He could at least have resigned himself into fame.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

    True Thomas lay on Huntlie bank;
    A ferlie he spied wi’ his e’e;
    And there he saw a lady bright,
    Come riding down by the Eildon Tree.
    Unknown. Thomas the Rhymer (l. 1–4)

    Politics is still the man’s game. The women are allowed to do the chores, the dirty work, and now and then—but only occasionally—one is present at some secret conference or other. But it’s not the rule. They can go out and get the vote, if they can and will; they can collect money, they can be grateful for being permitted to work. But that is all.
    Mary Roberts Rinehart (1876–1958)

    Johnny Clay: You like money. You got a great big dollar sign there where most women have a heart. So play it smart. Stay in character and you’ll have money. Plenty of it. George’ll have it and he’ll blow it on you. Probably buy himself a five-cent cigar.
    Sherry Peatty: You don’t know me very well, Johnny. I wouldn’t think of letting George throw his money away on cigars.
    Stanley Kubrick (b. 1928)
