Batteries and Range
BYD Auto uses a 16 kWh lithium iron phosphate batteries (LiFePO4) for the F3DM. BYD has said their LiFePO4 batteries are "inherently safe" because they are more chemically stable, although they pack less energy in each cell (100 Wh/kg), compared with more conventional lithium-ion (LiCoO2) batteries (150 to 200 Wh/kg). The F3DM battery pack consist of 100 3.3-volt cells stored under the cabin.
BYD says the car will have a 60 miles (97 km) all-electric range as well as a gasoline engine that allows operation in hybrid mode that extend the range for an additional 300 miles (480 km). The electric range assumes the car is traveling at a constant speed of 50 km/h, which is not likely to reflect real-world usage. The F3DM has a roof-mounted large solar panel capable of providing electric energy to run vehicle accessories such us the radio and climate control.

Famous quotes containing the words batteries and/or range:
“Postmodernism is, almost by definition, a transitional cusp of social, cultural, economic and ideological history when modernisms high-minded principles and preoccupations have ceased to function, but before they have been replaced with a totally new system of values. It represents a moment of suspension before the batteries are recharged for the new millennium, an acknowledgment that preceding the future is a strange and hybrid interregnum that might be called the last gasp of the past.”
—Gilbert Adair, British author, critic. Sunday Times: Books (London, April 21, 1991)
“In the range of things toddlers have to learn and endlessly reviewwhy you cant put bottles with certain labels in your mouth, why you have to sit on the potty, why you cant take whatever you want in the store, why you dont hit your friendsby the time we got to why you cant drop your peas, well, I was dropping a few myself.”
—Mary Kay Blakely (20th century)
