Black Rock City, often abbreviated to BRC, is the name of the temporary city created by Burning Man participants. Much of the layout and general city infrastructure is constructed by Department of Public Works (DPW) volunteers who often reside in Black Rock City for several weeks before and after the event. The remainder of the city including theme camps, villages, art installations and individual camping are all created by participants.

Famous quotes containing the words black, rock and/or city:
“a long shot at long odds, a black mare
By Hatred out of Envy by Despair.”
—James Vincent Cunningham (19111985)
“When the rock was hid by the surges swell,
The mariners heard the warning bell,
And then they knew the perilous rock,
And blessd the Abbot of Aberbrothok.”
—Robert Southey (17741843)
“I was asking for something specific and perfect for my city,
Whereupon lo! upsprang the aboriginal name.
Now I see what there is in a name, a word, liquid, sane, unruly,
musical, self-sufficient,
I see that the word of my city is that word from of old,
Because I see that word nested in nests of water-bays, superb,
Rich, hemmd thick all around with sailships and steamships, an
island sixteen miles long, solid-founded,”
—Walt Whitman (18191892)
