Burnham V. Superior Court of California - Justice Stevens's Opinion

Justice Stevens's Opinion

In a separate opinion concurring in the judgment, Justice John Paul Stevens stated that he declined to join either Justice Scalia's or Justice Brennan's opinion because he was "concerned by unnecessarily broad reach." In a footnote, Stevens mused that "erhaps the adage about hard cases making bad law should be revised to cover easy cases."

Famous quotes containing the words justice, stevens and/or opinion:

...I feel anxious for the fate of our monarchy, or democracy, or whatever is to take place. I soon get lost in a labyrinth of perplexities; but, whatever occurs, may justice and righteousness be the stability of our times, and order arise out of confusion. Great difficulties may be surmounted by patience and perseverance.
    Abigail Adams (1744–1818)

    Poet, patting more nonsense foamed
From the sea, conceive for the courts
Of these academies, the diviner health
    Disclosed in common forms.
    —Wallace Stevens (1879–1955)

My opinion is that the Northern states will manage somehow to muddle through.
    John Bright (1811–1889)
