On June 10, 1963 the school was renamed Burgess Elementary School in honor of Superintendent of Schools, Joseph R. Burgess, who served Sturbridge with distinction for over 25 years. It was previously named Sturbridge Elementary School. Also of note, Superintendent Burgess was awarded a pewter trophy bowl in recognition of this 25 year period of service. —Aldous Huxley (18941963)
