Buffalo Grove High School - Activities

Activities

Buffalo Grove supports 47 student clubs and activities, an entire and updated list of which can be found at the school's website for activities. These clubs range from music and the arts to culture and language, to social/political action and student government. Buffalo Grove also has an excellent Speech and Debate team, boasting the 99th best Lincoln Douglas Debate team in the NFL. (National Forensics League)

Among the clubs are chapters of these more nationally notable groups: NJROTC, SADD, Scholastic Bowl, Science Olympiad, and Mathletes. In March 2012, the Scholastic Bowl Team qualified for the IHSA State Meet in Peoria, IL by beating William Fremd High School in the Sectional Final at North Chicago High School. They were also the Regional Champions and MSL Conference Champions, beating Fremd in dramatic fashion 485-480.

Another prominent group at Buffalo Grove is its show choir, The Expressions. The Expressions is a mixed competition show choir composed of 38 singer-dancers, 12 band members and 4 crew members. The Expressions are directed by Debora Utley and choreographed by Randy Sage, and the Expressions band is directed by Bryan Itzkowitz . Similar to the hit television show, Glee, the group meets as a class as well as competes throughout the country at various show choir competitions. Some competitions which they attend are the Dekalb Indiana Show Choir Invitational Competition, the Chicagoland Showcase Competition, and the Nashville Show Choir Nationals Competition. Since the show choir was founded at Buffalo Grove, under the direction of Linda McEachran, The Expressions have a history of sweeping show choir competitions with awards in Best Vocals, Best Choreography, Best Band, and Grand Champions. Much of The Expressions' success can be attributed to the strong direction first implemented by Linda McEachran, known as "Miss Mac."

Several Expressions alumni have gone on into careers in music and dance. Current choreographer, Randy Sage, was an Expressions member himself and now choreographs for many award-winning high school and junior high show choirs around the United States. The Expressions' current band director, Bryan Itzkowitz, was also an Expressions member in high school, playing saxophone in the Expressions band. In addition to directing the Expressions band, Itzkowitz teaches band at Frost, Twain, and Whitman Elementary Schools.

Famous quotes containing the word activities:

That is the real pivot of all bourgeois consciousness in all countries: fear and hate of the instinctive, intuitional, procreative body in man or woman. But of course this fear and hate had to take on a righteous appearance, so it became moral, said that the instincts, intuitions and all the activities of the procreative body were evil, and promised a reward for their suppression. That is the great clue to bourgeois psychology: the reward business.
    —D.H. (David Herbert)

Both gossip and joking are intrinsically valuable activities. Both are essentially social activities that strengthen interpersonal bonds—we do not tell jokes and gossip to ourselves. As popular activities that evade social restrictions, they often refer to topics that are inaccessible to serious public discussion. Gossip and joking often appear together: when we gossip we usually tell jokes and when we are joking we often gossip as well.
Aaron Ben-Ze’Ev, Israeli philosopher. “The Vindication of Gossip,” Good Gossip, University Press of Kansas (1994)

I am admonished in many ways that time is pushing me inexorably along. I am approaching the threshold of age; in 1977 I shall be 142. This is no time to be flitting about the earth. I must cease from the activities proper to youth and begin to take on the dignities and gravities and inertia proper to that season of honorable senility which is on its way.
Mark Twain [Samuel Langhorne Clemens] (1835–1910)
