Brothers of Jesus - Family Trees and Pedigrees

Family Trees and Pedigrees

Aside from the Genealogies of Jesus present in the Gospel of Luke and Gospel of Matthew, there have been several attempts to piece together a detailed family tree of Jesus' immediate nuclear family:

The below diagram is by John J. Rousseau and Rami Arav (Augsberg Fortress 1995 edited; see "From Jesus to Christ: Jesus' Family Tree") It follows a traditional Protestant interpretation that Mary and Joseph had marital relations after the birth of Jesus, and that the brothers and sisters mentioned are those born in the at least 12 years that Joseph lived after Jesus' birth, prior to Mary's presumed widowhood at the time of the crucifixion. Although there is no mention of other children in the caravan with Mary and Joseph in the Luke 2 account of the journey to the temple when Jesus was 12.

Famous quotes containing the words family, trees and/or pedigrees:

    If family violence teaches children that might makes right at home, how will we hope to cure the futile impulse to solve worldly conflicts with force?
    Letty Cottin Pogrebin (20th century)

    The sugar maple is remarkable for its clean ankle. The groves of these trees looked like vast forest sheds, their branches stopping short at a uniform height, four or five feet from the ground, like eaves, as if they had been trimmed by art, so that you could look under and through the whole grove with its leafy canopy, as under a tent whose curtain is raised.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

    The feet of the rats
    scribble on the doorsills;
    the hieroglyphs of the rat footprints
    chatter the pedigrees of the rats
    Alfred Tennyson (1809–1892)
