Playing Surface
Brookvale Oval turf cover is predominantly kikuyu and there is a dense thatch (organic layer below turf) over the whole field resulting in a very spongy surface. There is a variable depth of slowly draining topsoil and a slight diagonal slope across the surface. There is no effective subsurface drainage system therefore excess water can only move via a slow infiltration process or across the surface.

Famous quotes containing the words playing and/or surface:
“Those who refuse to play second fiddle may wind up playing no fiddle at all.”
—Mason Cooley (b. 1927)
“If the man who paints only the tree, or flower, or other surface he sees before him were an artist, the king of artists would be the photographer. It is for the artist to do something beyond this: in portrait painting to put on canvas something more than the face the model wears for that one day; to paint the man, in short, as well as his features.”
—James Mcneill Whistler (18341903)
