Broadway Line (Lower Manhattan Surface) - Route Description

Route Description

The Broadway line begins at Columbus Circle. It runs east along Central Park South one block, and turns right onto Seventh Avenue. It follows Seventh to Times Square, and bears left on Broadway. It follows Broadway to Madison Square, and bears left onto Fifth Avenue. It runs on Fifth along with the Fifth/Madison Avenue Line to 8th Street. Both lines turn left onto East 8th Street (also known as St. Marks Place) east towards Broadway. At Broadway, the Broadway line turns right and terminates at the South Ferry; the Fifth/Madison Avenue Line continues to Fourth Avenue and terminates at Astor Place and Fourth Avenue. The current M5 runs along the former Broadway Line along 5th Avenue between East 59th Street (Central Park South) and East 8th Street (St. Marks Place). The M5 then Northbound buses use the former Sixth Avenue Line.

Famous quotes containing the words route and/or description:

A route differs from a road not only because it is solely intended for vehicles, but also because it is merely a line that connects one point with another. A route has no meaning in itself; its meaning derives entirely from the two points that it connects. A road is a tribute to space. Every stretch of road has meaning in itself and invites us to stop. A route is the triumphant devaluation of space, which thanks to it has been reduced to a mere obstacle to human movement and a waste of time.
    Milan Kundera (b. 1929)

The next Augustan age will dawn on the other side of the Atlantic. There will, perhaps, be a Thucydides at Boston, a Xenophon at New York, and, in time, a Virgil at Mexico, and a Newton at Peru. At last, some curious traveller from Lima will visit England and give a description of the ruins of St. Paul’s, like the editions of Balbec and Palmyra.
    Horace Walpole (1717–1797)
