Loss of BOTC
BOTC can be lost involuntarily through
- deprivation under conditions similar to those for British citizens
- independence of the territory concerned
The provisions for renunciation and resumption of BOTC mirror those for British citizenship. See British nationality law
Acquisition of a foreign citizenship does not cause loss of BOTC, however it may cause loss of Belonger status depending on the laws of the territory concerned.

Modified and reshaped into ethical goals and moral standards and a vision of what at our finest we might be, our dream of perfection lives onour lost narcissism lives onin our ego ideal.”
—Judith Viorst (20th century)
“A little cooling down of animal excitability and instinct, a little loss of animal toughness, a little irritable weakness and descent of the pain-threshold, will bring the worm at the core of all our usual springs of delight into full view, and turn us into melancholy metaphysicians.”
—William James (18421910)
