Brian Sonntag - Retirement and Successor

Retirement and Successor

In September 2011, Sonntag announced his retirement from the office of State Auditor: "In the past week, I made a difficult decision not to seek re-election as Washington State Auditor in 2012. It was a tough call, but it is the right decision. At the end of my current term, I will have served 20 years in this Office and 40 years in public service - 35 in elected office. Based on what we have accomplished and what we will continue to do on behalf of citizens, the 2012 election is the right time for the Office to transition to new leadership."

Sonntag has not endorsed a successor, but he did give comments on the candidates seeking to become the next State Auditor, saying:

Mark Miloscia -- “I’ve known him and his heart is in the right place, I think he cares.”
Troy Kelley -- “He has done a good job serving in the Legislature in a pretty swing district."
James Watkins -- “I’ve also gotten to know James Watkins. He is particularly qualified based on his background and experience to advance the Auditor’s office and be an independent advocate for taxpayers.”
Craig Pridemore -- (no comment)
