Personal Life
On 22 April 1948 Johnston married Pauline, the sister of his army colleague Gordon Tozer. They had five children (Andrew, Clare, Barry, Ian and Joanna). His youngest daughter, Joanna, has Down's Syndrome. He was appointed OBE in 1983 and CBE in 1991.
