Apartheid in South Africa

During 1970 and 1983, Johnston said that he disapproved of the boycotts of South Africa by England cricket teams as he believed that sport and politics should not be mixed. He had disagreements with John Arlott who backed the boycotts. However, in his 1974 autobiography, Johnston wrote that he both disliked and disagreed with apartheid, and looked forward to it being ended, which occurred following the release of Nelson Mandela in 1990.

Famous quotes containing the words south and/or africa:

Up from the South at break of day,
    Bringing to Winchester fresh dismay,
The affrighted air with a shudder bore,
Like a herald in haste, to the chieftain’s door,
The terrible grumble, and rumble, and roar,
Telling the battle was on once more,
    And Sheridan twenty miles away.
    Thomas Buchanan Read (1822–1872)

“I’ll love you dear, I’ll love you
    Till China and Africa meet,
And the river jumps over the mountain
And the salmon sing in the street.
    —W.H. (Wystan Hugh)
