Political Campaigns

Baird challenged Republican incumbent Linda Smith in 1996 and lost by only 113 votes. Smith gave up the seat to make an unsuccessful bid for the United States Senate in 1998. Baird jumped into the race and defeated State Senator Don Benton with 54.7 percent of the vote. He never faced another race even that close, and was re-elected five times.

On December 9, 2009, Baird announced he would not run for re-election in 2010.

Famous quotes containing the words political and/or campaigns:

What I think the political correctness debate is really about is the power to be able to define. The definers want the power to name. And the defined are now taking that power away from them.
    Toni Morrison (b. 1931)

That food has always been, and will continue to be, the basis for one of our greater snobbisms does not explain the fact that the attitude toward the food choice of others is becoming more and more heatedly exclusive until it may well turn into one of those forms of bigotry against which gallant little committees are constantly planning campaigns in the cause of justice and decency.
    Cornelia Otis Skinner (1901–1979)
