Diocese Mired in Clerical Sexual Abuse

The Ferns Report, published by the Irish Government on 25 October 2005 into child sex abuse in this diocese describes a catalogue of abuse between 1962 and 2002 involving 100 individual cases involving 21 priests during the tenures of Bishop Donal Herlihy (1964–1983) and later Bishop Comiskey.

It is alleged that Tomás O'Fiaich, Cardinal Archbishop of Armagh, had been told about the allegations, as had the Holy See.

Famous quotes containing the words clerical and/or abuse:

Exporting Church employees to Latin America masks a universal and unconscious fear of a new Church. North and South American authorities, differently motivated but equally fearful, become accomplices in maintaining a clerical and irrelevant Church. Sacralizing employees and property, this Church becomes progressively more blind to the possibilities of sacralizing person and community.
    Ivan Illich (b. 1926)

The love of truth, virtue, and the happiness of mankind are specious pretexts, but not the inward principles that set divines at work; else why should they affect to abuse human reason, to disparage natural religion, to traduce the philosophers as they universally do?
    George Berkeley (1685–1753)
