Breeders' Cup Sprint - Automatic Berths

Automatic Berths

Beginning in 2007, the Breeders' Cup developed "The Breeders' Cup Challenge," a series of races in each division that alloted automatic qualifying bids to winners of defined races. Each of the fourteen divisions has between three and six of these, "Win and You're In," qualifiers. In the Breeders' Cup Sprint Division there are four automatic berths. In 2009, the Win and You're In races are: the Smile Sprint Handicap, a grade two race at Calder Race Course; the Phoenix Stakes, a grade three race at Keeneland; the Pat O'Brien Handicap, a grade one race at Del Mar; and the Ancient Title Stakes a grade one race at Santa Anita Park.

Famous quotes containing the word automatic:

Natural selection, the blind, unconscious, automatic process which Darwin discovered, and which we now know is the explanation for the existence and apparently purposeful form of all life, has no purpose in mind. It has no mind and no mind’s eye. It does not plan for the future. It has no vision, no foresight, no sight at all. If it can be said to play the role of the watchmaker in nature, it is the blind watchmaker.
    Richard Dawkins (b. 1941)
