Automatic Berths
Beginning in 2007, the Breeders' Cup developed "The Breeders' Cup Challenge," a series of races in each division that alloted automatic qualifying bids to winners of defined races. Each of the fourteen divisions has between three and six of these "Win and You're In" qualifiers. In the Breeders' Cup Classic Division there are four automatic berths. In 2009, the Win and You're In races were: the Whitney Handicap, a Grade I race at Saratoga Race Course; the Washington Park Handicap, a Grade III race at Arlington Park; the Pacific Classic Stakes, a Grade I race at Del Mar; and the Goodwood Stakes, a Grade I race at Santa Anita Park.

Famous quotes containing the word automatic:
“What we learn for the sake of knowing, we hold; what we learn for the sake of accomplishing some ulterior end, we forget as soon as that end has been gained. This, too, is automatic action in the constitution of the mind itself, and it is fortunate and merciful that it is so, for otherwise our minds would be soon only rubbish-rooms.”
—Anna C. Brackett (1836–1911)
