Brazilian Flag Anthem - English Translation

English Translation

1
Hail, precious banner of hope!
Hail, august symbol of peace!
Thy noble presence to our minds
The greatness of our motherland does bring.
Chorus
Take the affection enclosed
In our manly chest, (*)
Dear symbol of the land,
Of the beloved land of Brazil!
2
In thy beauteous bosom portrays
This sky of purest blue,
The unmatched greenness of these forests,
And the splendor of the Southern Cross.
(Chorus)
3
Beholding thy sacred shadow,
We understand our duty,
And Brazil loved by its sons,
Powerful and happy shall be!
(Chorus)
4
Over the immense Brazilian Nation,
In times of happiness or grief,
Hover always, o sacred flag,
Pavilion of justice and love!
(Chorus)

(*) People with 20 or less years of age sing here "In our youthful chest"

Famous quotes containing the words english and/or translation:

I’ve sometimes thought ... that the difference between us and the English is that the Scotch are hard in all other respects but soft with women, and the English are hard with women but soft in all other respects.
    —J.M. (James Matthew)

To translate, one must have a style of his own, for otherwise the translation will have no rhythm or nuance, which come from the process of artistically thinking through and molding the sentences; they cannot be reconstituted by piecemeal imitation. The problem of translation is to retreat to a simpler tenor of one’s own style and creatively adjust this to one’s author.
    Paul Goodman (1911–1972)
