The district is a "special purpose" school district which serves Cal Farley's Boys Ranch, a facility for at-risk youth. Since Boys Ranch is a non-profit entity, whose only residents consist of the resident staff and the youth placed at the facility, the district has no taxable base and its board consists of Boys Ranch supporters. As such, the district is funded by a combination of donated funds and state and federal education funding.
