Bowen Hills Railway Station - History

History

There have been three railways stations called Bowen Hills. The first from 1882 to 1889 was near Campbell Street. In 1890 a new station opened at the south end of the Abbotsford Road tunnel.

Due to insufficient room to extend the platforms, the second Bowen Hills station was closed in 1971. A new Bowen Hills station opened on the current site at the north end of the tunnel in 1973.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

While the Republic has already acquired a history world-wide, America is still unsettled and unexplored. Like the English in New Holland, we live only on the shores of a continent even yet, and hardly know where the rivers come from which float our navy.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

... in a history of spiritual rupture, a social compact built on fantasy and collective secrets, poetry becomes more necessary than ever: it keeps the underground aquifers flowing; it is the liquid voice that can wear through stone.
    Adrienne Rich (b. 1929)

American time has stretched around the world. It has become the dominant tempo of modern history, especially of the history of Europe.
    Harold Rosenberg (1906–1978)
