The Prophet
His name means "Yahweh has remembered." Not much is known about Zechariah’s life other than what may be inferred from the book. It has been speculated that his ancestor Iddo was the head of a priestly family who returned with Zerubbabel (Nehemiah 12:4), and that Zechariah may himself have been a priest as well as a prophet. This is supported by Zechariah's interest in the Temple and the priesthood, and from Iddo's preaching in the Books of Chronicles.

Famous quotes containing the word prophet:
“It is the manner of gods and prophets to begin: Thou shalt have none other God or Prophet but me. If I were to start as a God or a prophet I think I should take the line: Thou shalt not believe in me. Thou shalt not have me for a God. Thou shalt worship any d_____d thing thou likest except me. This should be my first and great commandment, and my second should be like unto it.”
—Samuel Butler (18351902)
“But any prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, or who presumes to speak in my name a word that I have not commanded the prophet to speak -that prophet shall die.”
—Bible: Hebrew, Deuteronomy 18:20.
