Personal Life
Gawen DeAngelo Wells is named after his father Gawen Wells. The nickname, Bonzi, originated from the cravings his mother, Christine Scaife Coleman, had for ice cream bonbons during her pregnancy with him. His parents called him "bonbon" until the age of two, and it eventually evolved into what it is today. He is the father to three sons, Duane, Gawen and Christian.
In 2003, Wells shed tears of joy when his hometown Roy C. Buley Community Center named its gymnasium in his honor. It is now called the Bonzi Wells Gymnasium. As a small child at the community center watching teams get picked for a game from the sidelines "like a cheerleader," his uncle and team captain chose the young Bonzi. "I thought he was kidding," Wells recalls, "but he really picked me. And I played as hard as I can. I can remember that day like it was yesterday and that was the day that really made me want to be one of the best." Wells, who donated money to keep the gymnasium from closing its doors, said he did not expect such a reaction, that he was "doing it for the children."

Famous quotes containing the words personal and/or life:
“In the twentieth century one of the most personal relationships to have developed is that of the person and the state.... Its become a fact of life that governments have become very intimate with people, most always to their detriment.”
—E.L. (Edgar Lawrence)
“War is more like a novel than it is like real life and that is its eternal fascination. It is a thing based on reality but invented, it is a dream made real, all the things that make a novel but not really life.”
—Gertrude Stein (18741946)
