Author
In June 2001 Duval received a letter from John Donatich, the publisher at Basic Books. The company was creating a series of books categorized as the Art of Mentoring. The first book, Letters to a Young Lawyer, was written by Alan Dershowitz.
He was directed to give advice and guidance to his son and other family members or friends, but delivered in the form of a personal letter rather than a commentary. It was suggested that he write what he would have written at significant milestones in his or the recipient's life, and include humorous or life-changing stories.
Duval was assisted by freelance writer Carl Vigeland, who wrote a Playboy magazine article on David Duval in November 1999. Letters to a Young Golfer was published in 2002.

Famous quotes containing the word author:
“The role of the writer is not simply to arrange Being according to his own lights; he must also serve as a medium to Being and remain open to its often unfathomable dictates. This is the only way the work can transcend its creator and radiate its meaning further than the author himself can see or perceive.”
—Václav Havel (b. 1936)
“...there was the annual Fourth of July picketing at Independence Hall in Philadelphia. ...I thought it was ridiculous to have to go there in a skirt. But I did it anyway because it was something that might possibly have an effect. I remember walking around in my little white blouse and skirt and tourists standing there eating their ice cream cones and watching us like the zoo had opened.”
—Martha Shelley, U.S. author and social activist. As quoted in Making History, part 3, by Eric Marcus (1992)
“If modesty and candor are necessary to an author in his judgment of his own works, no less are they in his reader.”
—Sarah Fielding (17101768)
