Expansion Attempts and Related Projects
Proposals to relieve congestion in the tunnels have been considered from time to time. In February 2012, Transport for London began a consultation exercise for a new tunnel from Silvertown to the Greenwich Peninsula to carry 6,000 vehicles per hour. The results of the consultation are planned to be published in Spring 2012 and the tunnel is provisionally planned to open in 2021. A vehicle ferry between Beckton and Thamesmead is also part of the consultation.

Famous quotes containing the words expansion, attempts, related and/or projects:
“Every expansion of government in business means that government in order to protect itself from the political consequences of its errors and wrongs is driven irresistibly without peace to greater and greater control of the nations press and platform. Free speech does not live many hours after free industry and free commerce die.”
—Herbert Hoover (18741964)
“No rules exist, and examples are simply life-savers answering the appeals of rules making vain attempts to exist.”
—André Breton (18961966)
“Gambling is closely related to theft, and lewdness to murder.”
—Chinese proverb.
“But look what we have built ... low-income projects that become worse centers of delinquency, vandalism and general social hopelessness than the slums they were supposed to replace.... Cultural centers that are unable to support a good bookstore. Civic centers that are avoided by everyone but bums.... Promenades that go from no place to nowhere and have no promenaders. Expressways that eviscerate great cities. This is not the rebuilding of cities. This is the sacking of cities.”
—Jane Jacobs (b. 1916)
