Early Life, Education, and Early Career
Born in Quincy, Massachusetts, Delahunt was educated at Thayer Academy, Middlebury College and Boston College Law School and later served in the United States Coast Guard Reserve. He served a term in the Massachusetts House of Representatives (1973–75) before serving as district attorney of Norfolk County for more than 20 years.
While district attorney, in 1986 one Amy Bishop of Braintree killed her brother Seth. Braintree Police Chief John Polio released Bishop from the city's holding cell to her mother's care. However the union president at the time, Paul Fraizer _ who later rose to chief - as well as several other officers opposed her release. State Police assigned to Delahunt's office investigated the shooting over the next several weeks, but declined to prosecute. Amy Bishop went on to Huntsville and in 2010 murdered three colleagues. The records of this case from 1987 had disappeared by then.
