Big Brother 5 (U.S.) - Summary

Summary

On Day 1, 13 of the total 14 HouseGuests entered the house. They competed in the "Hungry Hungry Helix" food competition that night, in which they each had one night to crawl through a rotating helix DNA strand with small yellow balls attached to it. Each ball had the name of a food item on it, and each ball they managed to get across the helix would serve as an eatable food for that week. Everyone but Holly succeeded in getting their balls across in time. Lori got the "lobster tail" ball, which she was later instructed to keep. Host Julie Chen later asked Lori to open the ball, where she found a key. She used the key to open a box and found $10,000 inside of it. Julie informed her she could keep the money only if she put the rest of the HouseGuests on the peanut butter and jelly diet for the week. Lori agreed and took the money. On Day 2, HouseGuests partnered up to compete in the first Head of Household competition. As there was an uneven number of players, Will chose to sit out. In the "Treadmills of Terror" Head of Household competition, one partner answered true or false questions while the other ran on a treadmill. Every time someone's partner missed a question, their treadmill sped up. The last team to not fall off of their treadmill would win. Scott ultimately beat out Karen, meaning he and his partner Jase had won the competition. To decide which of the two would be the HoH, Will asked Jase a question about himself. If Jase answered correctly he would be HoH, if he answered incorrectly, Scott would be HoH. Jase answered correctly, earning the title of HoH for the week.

On Day 4, the HouseGuests competed in the "Margarita Madness" luxury competition, in which they fought for the right to use the hot tub as well as a margarita party. They had to make a large margarita in less than ten minutes, with Cowboy jumping into the cup dressed as a lime to signify their completion. They narrowly completed the competition, earning the right to use the hot tub and the margarita party. Following a talk with Nakomis about last names, Michael began to realize that the two were related, and later informed Jase and Scott about this. After speaking with Nakomis about the subject, Michael and Nakomis were called to the Diary Room and returned with letters. Upon reading them, they learned that they had the same father. On Day 6, Jase chose to nominate Mike and Nakomis for eviction. On Day 8, the HouseGuests learned the change to the Power of Veto, in which the HoH and nominees would each choose one partner to play with. Jase chose Scott, Mike chose Holly, and Nakomis chose Drew. In the "Flaringo Toss" competition, a HouseGuest had to toss a hoola hoop across the yard in an attempt to make it land on a decorative flamingo in the backyard. They would then receive a score depending on the area where their flamingo landed. The thrower would then challenge another player. If that player got a higher score, the challenger was eliminated, and if they failed to match the score, they were eliminated. If the two tied, both remained in the game. Ultimately, Scott won the Power of Veto. On Day 10, Scott chose to leave Jase's nominations the same. During the first live eviction, viewers learned that Adria and Natalie were secret twins, both playing as Adria. On Day 14, Mike was evicted in a unanimous vote.

Following Mike's eviction, Marvin won the "Majority Rules" Head of Household competition, in which players had to answer questions while attempting to remain in the majority. If they answered outside of the majority, they were eliminated. Marvin won after the competition went to a tie-breaker round. The following day, HouseGuests competed in the "Catapoultry" food competition, in which they found the backyard had been turned into a barnyard. They would try and shoot rubber chickens into various "nests" representing food items lined up on the wall. If a chicken landed in a nest, they would earn those food items for the week. There was also a space, the "bad egg", in which landing a chicken in it would result in the house losing all of the obtained food items. Will landed a chicken in this spot, though they managed to gain some food back. On Day 15, Marvin chose to nominate Holly and Lori for eviction, referring to them as the "queens" of the house. When picking players for the Veto, Marvin picked Drew, Holly picked her showmantic partner Jase, and Lori picked Karen. In the "Snag the Veto" competition, HouseGuests had to untangle a rope and successfully pull a Veto symbol out of the tangled rope. Jase was the first to complete the task, narrowly beating Lori, and he earned the Power of Veto for the week. On Day 18, Jase chose to save Holly from the block, and Marvin named Karen the replacement nominee. On Day 21, Lori was evicted in a seven to two vote.

Following Lori's eviction, Drew won the "High/Low" Head of Household competition. The competition saw HouseGuests blindfolded and answering questions about the game. For one answer, they would step up on the stairway they were standing on, and down for another answer. The following day, the HouseGuests competed in the "Alphabet Soup" food competition. To win their food for the week, the HouseGuests must leap into a giant bowl of tomato flavored Alphabet Soup, grabbing letters that spell a type of food. They must then place those letters on a slate and call out the kind of food that it is. Consonants are on the surface, vowels are on the bottom. Upon completion of each food type, the HouseGuest must then clear the slate by dumping the letters back into the bowl. On Day 22, Drew chose to nominate Holly and Nakomis for eviction, and stated Holly had the "power of persuasion" and needed to go that week. Despite this statement, Jase later convinced him that Holly needed to stay that week, and the guys devised a plan to keep her. When picking players for the Power of Veto, Drew chose Scott, Holly chose Jase, and Nakomis chose Adria. In the "Bluff Me a Veto", each player had a turn as a "Dealer." They drew a card with a question and answer printed on it. The answer is a truthful response that had previously given to that question on a questionnaire. They read the question to the other 5 HouseGuests and either read the truthful answer or bluff a different answer. The HouseGuests had to decide whether that person is telling the truth or bluffing. They signified whether they believe or not by placing a bet with a giant chip in front of them that either reads "Bluff' or "Truth." If the HouseGuest guessed correctly they got to keep their chip. If they were wrong, the "Dealer" got to keep their chip. The winner was the HouseGuest with the most chips at the end of two rounds. Ultimately, Nakomis won the Power of Veto. On Day 25, Nakomis chose to use the Power of Veto on herself and Adria was named her replacement nominee. On Day 28, despite Jase's attempts to keep her, Holly was evicted in a seven to one vote.

Following Holly's eviction, the HouseGuests competed in the "I Have a Secret" endurance Head of Household competition. The competition saw them standing on a small pedestal by a life-size cutout of themselves. Without crossing a black line by their feed, they had to hold a finger over a button on top of their mouths on the cutout. If a HouseGuest took their hand off the button, they were eliminated. As the game progressed, various rules were added, such as they could not change hands or not raise their feet off of the pedestal. After a nine hour struggle, Diane won the competition, becoming the first female Head of Household of the season. Due to the endurance Head of Household, no food competition was held that week. On Day 29, Diane chose to nominate Jase and Scott for eviction. When picking players for the Power of Veto competition, Diane chose Will, Jase chose Michael, and Scott chose Drew. In the "This Little Piggy Won the Veto" competition, each player had ten Veto chips to distribute into six ceramic pigs representing a HouseGuest. They had to use the chips on at least two pigs. The pig closest to having 20 chips inside of it without going over would be the Veto winner. Ultimately, Jase's pig had the most in it without going over, and he earned the Power of Veto for the week. Jase later chose to remove himself from the block, and Diane named Marvin his replacement nominee. On Day 35, Scott was evicted in a four to three vote. Following Scott's eviction, the nine remaining HouseGuests learned of the twins twist, and Natalie officially entered the game as her own player.

Following the eviction and twist reveal, Nakomis won the "Home Is Where the Answer Is" Head of Household competition, in which the players answered true or false questions about the Big Brother house. On Day 36, the HouseGuests split into teams to compete in the "Fast Times and Custard Pie" food competition, which resulted in Adria, Diane, Jase and Drew being on the peanut butter and jelly diet for the week. While planning for nominations, Nakomis realized that her alliance now had the numbers to complete the "Six Finger Plan". Nakomis planned to put up two people from her alliance, and they would each pick another member from her alliance to play for the Power of Veto. This ensured that all six players in the Veto competition were on Nakomis's side. Then, the Veto would be used and Jase would be nominated in their place. This allowed them to nominate Jase and not allow him to play in the Power of Veto. On Day 36, Nakomis nominated Diane and Marvin, setting the stage for her plan. In the "Pop Goes the Veto" competition, HouseGuests had to pop balloons over a HouseGuests picture. The last player to not have all of their balloons popped won the Veto. Drew won the Power of Veto. He later chose to save Diane from the block, and Jase was named the replacement nominee. On Day 42, Jase was evicted from the house in a six to one vote.

Following Jase's eviction, Adria won the "The Puck Stops Here", in which the players had to shoot a puck down a shuffleboard with various rubber band attatched to it. Their goal was to aim for a blue space on the board. Adria was the closest to the blue spot, thus becoming the new Head of Household. During the "Backyard Burger Bonanza" food competition, the HouseGuests split into teams and had to assemble numerous hamburgers from across the yard. The team who made the most hamburgers would earn food for the week. On Day 43, Adria nominated Marvin and former alliance member Will for eviction. She later revealed her intentions were to divide the house into three different sections and determine people's true loyalties. When picking players for the Power of Veto competition, Adria chose Drew, Will chose Diane and Marvin chose Michael. Adria went on to win the "A Very Veto Christmas" Veto competition, in which the players traded presents that were worth a certain amount of Veto points. The player with the highest total of Veto points at the end of the competition would be the Veto winner. The HouseGuests later competed in the "Admit One" luxury competition, in which Drew, Diane and Will earned the right to watch the Paramount Pictures film Without A Paddle starring Seth Green and Dax Shepard. Despite Will hoping his former ally would save him with the Veto, Adria chose to leave her nominations intact. On Day 49, Will was evicted from the house in a four to three vote after Adria had to break a tie.

Following Will's eviction, Nakomis won the "Who Said It?" Head of Household competition, in which players answered questions based on statements made by the previously evicted HouseGuests. In the "Blenderlicious" food competition, each HouseGuest listed the meal they wanted the most. They later entered the backyard and found they would have to eat these meals in under three minutes. The twist, however, was that they would be drinking a blended version of the meal. On Day 50, Nakomis nominated Adria and Natalie for eviction, due to Adria's betrayal the previous week. When picking players for the Power of Veto competition, Nakomis chose Marvin, Adria chose Drew, and Natalie chose Michael. Adria was the eventual winner of the "Mug Shot" Veto competition, which involved players having to guess which three HouseGuests made up the six pictures of the combined faces in the backyard. In "The Web" luxury competition, teams competed for a shopping spree on Amazon.com. The house won the shopping spree, while Diane won a $1,000 prize. On Day 53, Adria chose to use the Power of Veto on herself, and Nakomis chose Michael as the replacement nominee. On Day 56, Natalie was evicted in a four to one vote.

Following Natalie's eviction, Marvin won the "Putting for Power" golf based competition. Splitting up into two groups of three, the players attempt to get a ball in the hole against an uphill course. The first from each group to successfully get a ball into a hole would advance to the final round. Marvin and Michael advanced to the final round, in which the person who sunk the most balls in sixty seconds would become the new Head of Household. Marvin managed to get more than Michael, bcoming the new Head of Household. On Day 57, Marvin nominated Adria and Michael for eviction. When picking players for the Power of Veto competition, Marvin chose Drew, Adria chose Karen, and Michael chose Nakomis. In the "Ice Ice Veto" competition, HouseGuests must use a "Super Soaker Gun" to try and free the Veto medallion from a frozen block of ice. There is also a "T", in which they can open a toolbox to help free the Veto quicker. Despite Adria almost winning, Karen was the eventual winner of the Power of Veto. Karen later chose to not exercise the power, despite Adria's pleas. On Day 63, Adria was evicted in a unanimous four to zero vote.

Following Adria's eviction, the house learned it would be a Double Eviction Week, and that someone else would be leaving the following day. Drew then won the "Chemical Reaction" Head of Household competition, in which mixing chemicals determined whether a HouseGuest had answered a question correctly or incorrectly. He later chose to nominate Diane and Marvin for eviction. When Diane won the "Bounced" Power of Veto competition, she chose to remove herself from the block and Nakomis was named her replacement nominee. On Day 64, Marvin was evicted from the house. Following Marvin's eviction, Nakomis won the "Ready, Set, Gone" Head of Household competition, in which the HouseGuests answer questions about items that are missing in the house. In a close race between Diane, Michael and Nakomis, Nakomis was the eventual winner. On Day 65, she chose to nominate Drew and Michael for eviction. The following day, all of the remaining HouseGuests competed in the "Caged" Power of Veto competition, in which the players had to use random items from previous competitions to grab a set of keys and bring them to the cage they are locked in. The first person to get out of their cage and grab the Power of Veto was the winner. Diane was the eventual winner. She chose to use the Power of Veto on Drew, and Nakomis had no option but to name Karen as the replacement nominee, as Karen was the only eligible HouseGuest. On Day 70, Karen was evicted in a unanimous two to zero vote.

Following Karen's eviction, Drew won the "Before or After" Head of Household competition, which required the three players to determine whether an event happened before or after another event. The following day, the Final Four competed in the "Trashin' the Fashion" luxury competition, in which they had to destroy various clothing items in numerous ways, and earned a shopping spree in the house. On Day 71, Drew nominated Diane and Nakomis for eviction. When Michael won the "Socket to Me" Final Power of Veto competition, it gave him the sole vote to evict either Diane or Nakomis. On Day 75, Michael chose to evict Nakomis, making Michael, Drew and Diane the Final Three. In the "Earthquake" endurance portion of the Final Head of Household competition, Drew beat out Diane and Michael. Michael later won "Twisted Twosomes", the second part of the final Head of Household competition. On Day 78, Drew and Michael faced off in the "Encore Presentation" final portion of the Final Head of Household competition, with Drew reigning victorious. He chose to evict Diane minutes later, making Drew and Michael the Final Two. On Day 82, Drew was crowned the winner of Big Brother 5 in a four to three jury vote.

Famous quotes containing the word summary:

Product of a myriad various minds and contending tongues, compact of obscure and minute association, a language has its own abundant and often recondite laws, in the habitual and summary recognition of which scholarship consists.
    Walter Pater (1839–1894)

I have simplified my politics into an utter detestation of all existing governments; and, as it is the shortest and most agreeable and summary feeling imaginable, the first moment of an universal republic would convert me into an advocate for single and uncontradicted despotism. The fact is, riches are power, and poverty is slavery all over the earth, and one sort of establishment is no better, nor worse, for a people than another.
    George Gordon Noel Byron (1788–1824)
