Early Life
Besch was born in Vienna, Austria, the daughter of theater actress Gusti Huber, who starred in German films during World War II and left Austria in the mid-1940s. Besch had a stepfather, Joseph Besch, a radio executive and former captain in the U.S. army. She had two sisters, Drea and Christina, and a brother, Andrew. She grew up in Mount Kisco, New York, and attended Mount Kisco elementary and junior high schools. While she was attending Mount Kisco High School it consolidated with adjacent northern Westchester County villages, forming Fox Lane High School, from which Besch graduated in 1959. She later moved to New York City. Besch was the mother of actress Samantha Mathis.

Famous quotes containing the words early and/or life:
“I looked at my daughters, and my boyhood picture, and appreciated the gift of parenthood, at that moment, more than any other gift I have ever been given. For what person, except ones own children, would want so deeply and sincerely to have shared your childhood? Who else would think your insignificant and petty life so precious in the living, so rich in its expressiveness, that it would be worth partaking of what you were, to understand what you are?”
—Gerald Early (20th century)
“Life is a dangerous adventure, says the American; and he is half right: life is dangerous, but its not an adventure.”
—José Bergamín (18951983)
