Bethlem Royal Hospital - Europe's Oldest Psychiatric Hospital

Europe's Oldest Psychiatric Hospital

Bethlem is Europe's oldest extant psychiatric hospital and has operated as such, continuously, for over six hundred years. It has also been the continent's most famous and, indeed, infamous specialist institution for the care and control of the insane and its popular designation – "Bedlam" – has long been synonymous with madness itself.

Famous quotes containing the words europe, oldest, psychiatric and/or hospital:

What passes for identity in America is a series of myths about one’s heroic ancestors. It’s astounding to me, for example, that so many people really seem to believe that the country was founded by a band of heroes who wanted to be free. That happens not to be true. What happened was that some people left Europe because they couldn’t stay there any longer and had to go someplace else to make it. They were hungry, they were poor, they were convicts.
    James Baldwin (1924–1987)

The oldest books are still only just out to those who have not read them.
    Samuel Butler (1835–1902)

Indeed the involuntary character of psychiatric treatment is at odds with the spirit and ethics of medicine itself.
    Kate Millett (b. 1934)

The church is a sort of hospital for men’s souls, and as full of quackery as the hospital for their bodies. Those who are taken into it live like pensioners in their Retreat or Sailor’s Snug Harbor, where you may see a row of religious cripples sitting outside in sunny weather.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
