The Sanctuary
The Foundation church relocated animals from an Arizona ranch to the current sanctuary grounds in 1984, informally calling it "Best Friends" and is now a key component of their work, operating the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, the nation’s largest no-kill shelter, located in Southwestern Utah near the town of Kanab.
The sanctuary covers 3,700 acres (15 km2) owned by Best Friends, with an additional 33,000 acres (130 km2) leased from the United States Bureau of Land Management. It is located in Angel Canyon (formerly Kanab Canyon), about five miles (8 km) north of Kanab, Utah, at the heart of the “Golden Circle” of Zion National Park, the Grand Canyon's North Rim, Bryce Canyon National Park, and Lake Powell. The land in and around Kanab, including at the sanctuary, was the backdrop for western movies and television shows dating back to the 1940s. Among the dramas filmed in the area were "The Lone Ranger" television series and movies McKenna's Gold and The Outlaw Josey Wales.
National Geographic Channel's DogTown series was filmed at the sanctuary, which is home to approximately 1,700 animals.

Famous quotes containing the word sanctuary:
“Proverbs, like the sacred books of each nation, are the sanctuary of the intuitions. That which the droning world, chained to appearances, will not allow the realist to say in his own words, it will suffer him to say in proverbs without contradiction.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“If the veil were withdrawn from the sanctuary of domestic life, and man could look upon the fear, the loathing, the detestations which his tyranny and reckless gratification of self has caused to take the place of confiding love, which placed a woman in his power, he would shudder at the hideous wrong of the present regulations of the domestic abode.”
—Lydia Jane Pierson, U.S. womens rights activist and corresponding editor of The Womans Advocate. The Womans Advocate, represented in The Lily, pp. 117-8 (1855-1858 or 1860)
