Gene Siskel gave the film a "Thumbs Down," criticizing Ebert for liking the film more than Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket. their difference in opinion was parodied in television show The Critic, where Siskel taunts Ebert with "coming from the guy who liked Benji the Hunted!"

Benji the Hunted holds a 63% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

It grossed $22,257,624, enough for it to be considered a bomb.

Famous quotes containing the words critical and/or reception:

Post-modernism has cut off the present from all futures. The daily media add to this by cutting off the past. Which means that critical opinion is often orphaned in the present.
    John Berger (b. 1926)

Satire is a sort of glass, wherein beholders do generally discover everybody’s face but their own; which is the chief reason for that kind of reception it meets in the world, and that so very few are offended with it.
    Jonathan Swift (1667–1745)
