Ben & Jerry's - Wages

Wages

Ben & Jerry's used to have a policy that no employee's rate of pay shall exceed seven times that of entry-level employees. In 1995, entry-level employees were paid $8 hourly, and the highest paid employee was President and Chief Operating Officer Chuck Lacey, who earned $150,000 annually. When Ben Cohen resigned as Chief Executive Officer and Ben & Jerry's announced the search for a new CEO in 1995, the company ended the seven-to-one-ratio policy.

Famous quotes containing the word wages:

I hear ... foreigners, who would boycott an employer if he hired a colored workman, complain of wrong and oppression, of low wages and long hours, clamoring for eight-hour systems ... ah, come with me, I feel like saying, I can show you workingmen’s wrong and workingmen’s toil which, could it speak, would send up a wail that might be heard from the Potomac to the Rio Grande; and should it unite and act, would shake this country from Carolina to California.
    Anna Julia Cooper (1859–1964)

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
—Bible: New Testament St. Paul, in Romans, 6:23.

If the wages of sin are death, what else, I should like to know, is the wages of virtue?
    Samuel Butler (1835–1902)
