Early Life

Born Mary Lorimer Beatrix Barnes in Carlisle, England. She was educated at Harraby Secondary Modern School and Carlisle and County High School for Girls. Her parents, Jim and Catherine, were Communist Party members and she had a sister, Tini, and a younger brother, Jimmy who also became a Communist. Campbell failed her A-levels.
